Произошла в рождественскую ночь 26 декабря 1776, когда 2,5 тыс. солдат под командованием Дж. Вашингтона [Washington, George] пересекли замерзшую р. Делавэр [Delaware River] и утром внезапно ворвались в город, занятый наемниками - немцами-"гессианцами" [Hessians]. Американцы захватили в плен более 900 солдат противника, их командующий был смертельно ранен. В результате войска Вашингтона смогли существенно пополнить свои запасы оружия, снаряжения и продовольствия
